How A-Levels Work
A-Level study runs across two years. The first year, often called AS Level, builds the foundational understanding a student needs in each subject they've chosen. The second year, A2 Level, builds directly on that foundation with more advanced content and higher expectations of independent thinking. Most students take three or four subjects across both years. Final exams are typically sat in May and June, with results released in mid-August, though a smaller re-sit window runs in October and November for students who need it, with results following in January. Some subjects also include coursework that's assessed alongside the written exams.

English (Language & Literature)
English at A-Level blends close language analysis with the study of literary texts — novels, poetry and plays drawn from a range of eras and voices. Students are mostly assessed through essay-based papers that test how well they can read closely, build an argument, and analyse a text's meaning and craft rather than simply summarise it.
Mathematics
A-Level Maths covers Pure Mathematics — algebra, geometry, sequences and trigonometry — alongside Applied Mathematics, which brings in mechanics and statistics. It's usually assessed across three papers of around two hours each, mixing multiple-choice, structured problems, and longer extended-response questions.
Physics
Physics at this level moves through mechanics, electricity and circuits, waves, thermal and nuclear physics, and fields. Exams are typically split across three papers of around two hours each, and alongside the written papers, students build up a practical-skills record from experiments carried out over the course.
Chemistry & Biology
Chemistry covers atomic structure, organic chemistry, and physical and inorganic chemistry, while Biology spans cell biology, genetics, physiology and ecology — each assessed across three papers of around two hours. Both subjects mix structured questions, data-response tasks based on real experimental results, and longer essay-style answers that test depth of understanding.
