What NAPLAN Covers
Reading
Tests how well a student can understand and interpret a range of text types — from narratives and articles to diagrams and instructions — not just decode the words on the page.
Writing
Asks students to plan and produce a clear, well-structured written response within a set time, testing organisation and expression as much as grammar.
Language Conventions
Covers the grammar, punctuation and spelling skills that sit underneath good writing, usually through short, focused questions.
Numeracy
Covers number sense, problem-solving and applied maths skills across everyday and mathematical contexts, not just straightforward calculation.
When & Who
NAPLAN is held once a year, typically in May, though exact dates can shift slightly and are communicated directly by schools. It's overseen nationally by ACARA — the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority — which sets the testing standards and manages how results are reported, while individual states and territories help administer the test on the ground. Requirements and accommodations can vary a little from state to state, so if a family has questions about participation or needs special arrangements for their child, it's worth raising directly with the school.
